Product Details
Ambrisentan is a medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. The 5mg tablet is a common dosage form for this medication.
How it Works:
Ambrisentan belongs to a class of drugs called endothelin receptor antagonists (ERAs). In people with PAH, a natural substance called endothelin causes the blood vessels in the lungs to constrict and narrow. Ambrisentan works by blocking the action of endothelin, which helps to relax these blood vessels, allowing for better blood flow and reducing the workload on the heart.
Key Uses and Benefits:
Treats PAH: It is used to manage the symptoms of PAH.
Improves Exercise Ability: By reducing the pressure in the pulmonary arteries, it helps patients with PAH to be more physically active.
Delays Worsening of the Condition: It helps to slow down the progression of the disease.
Combination Therapy: Ambrisentan may be prescribed alone or in combination with other medications, such as tadalafil, for enhanced effectiveness.
Dosage and Administration:
The usual starting dose is 5mg once daily. A doctor may increase the dose to 10mg if needed and if the medication is well-tolerated.
The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken.
It can be taken with or without food, but it is best to take it at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the drug in the body.
Important Safety Information and Side Effects:
Pregnancy Risk: Ambrisentan can cause serious birth defects. Women of childbearing age must have a negative pregnancy test before starting the medication and must use two reliable methods of birth control throughout treatment and for at least one month after stopping it.
Liver Problems: The medication can cause an increase in liver enzymes, and in rare cases, liver damage. Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor liver function. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fever, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Fluid Retention (Edema): Ambrisentan can cause the body to retain fluid, leading to swelling in the hands, legs, ankles, or feet. This can be a serious issue, especially for people with heart conditions.
Anemia: It may cause a decrease in red blood cell count (anemia).
Decreased Sperm Count: Ambrisentan may lower a man's sperm count, which could affect fertility.
Other Common Side Effects: These can include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, and sinusitis.
