Product Details
Biovac A is a vaccine used to prevent infection from the Hepatitis A virus (HAV), which causes a serious liver infection.
Mechanism of Action
Biovac A is a live attenuated vaccine. This means it is made from a weakened, but still living, strain of the Hepatitis A virus. When the vaccine is injected, it introduces this weakened virus into the body. The body's immune system recognizes the virus as foreign and produces antibodies to fight it. This process creates an "immune memory," so if the person is ever exposed to the real, un-weakened Hepatitis A virus in the future, their body can quickly produce the necessary antibodies to fight off the infection and prevent illness.
Uses
Primary Immunization: Biovac A is used for active immunization against Hepatitis A in adults and children aged 1 year and older.
High-Risk Individuals: It is particularly recommended for people who are at a higher risk of contracting Hepatitis A, such as travelers to regions where the virus is common, individuals with chronic liver disease, and those who work in certain occupations like food handling.
Dosage and Administration
Dosage: A single dose of 0.5 ml is typically administered.
Administration: The vaccine is given as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) over the deltoid muscle of the upper arm.
Booster Dose: For the most part, a single dose is considered to provide adequate protection, and a booster dose is usually not required.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Biovac A are generally mild and temporary. They can include:
Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site
Headache
Nausea
Fatigue
Loss of appetite
Mild fever
Important Considerations
Storage: The vaccine must be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2°C and 8°C. It should not be frozen.
Contraindications: The vaccine should not be given to individuals with a known allergy to any of its components, those with an acute febrile illness, or those with an immunological deficiency.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Information on the use of Biovac A during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited, and it is generally recommended to consult a doctor before use in these cases.
No Protection from Other Viruses: This vaccine only protects against the Hepatitis A virus. It does not provide immunity against other forms of hepatitis, such as Hepatitis B or C.
