VIROPIL tablets are a fixed-dose combination of three antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. This medication is a part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), and it works by suppressing the replication of the HIV virus in the body.
Active Ingredients and Their Functions:
Each VIROPIL tablet contains:
Dolutegravir (50 mg): This is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI). It works by blocking the HIV integrase enzyme, which the virus needs to integrate its genetic material into the DNA of the host cell. By inhibiting this process, it prevents the virus from multiplying.
Lamivudine (300 mg): This is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It interferes with the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is crucial for the virus to convert its RNA into DNA. This action effectively stops the virus from replicating.
Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (300 mg): This is another NRTI, a prodrug that is converted into the active drug tenofovir. Similar to lamivudine, it inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing viral replication.
Uses:
Treatment of HIV-1 Infection: VIROPIL is indicated for the management of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents (typically those weighing 35 kg or more).
Reduces Viral Load and Boosts Immunity: The combination of these three drugs works to reduce the amount of HIV in the blood (viral load) and increase the count of CD4 cells, which are a key part of the immune system. This helps the body fight off other infections and illnesses.
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): In some cases, it may also be used as a part of a regimen for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis to reduce the risk of HIV infection after potential exposure.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of VIROPIL are generally mild and may include:
Headache
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhea
Fatigue or weakness
Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
Dizziness
Rash
More serious, but less common, side effects can occur, and patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms like:
Signs of a severe allergic reaction (fever, rash, swelling)
Liver toxicity (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine)
Kidney problems
Depression or other severe mood changes
Important Considerations:
VIROPIL is a prescription-only medication and should only be taken under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with kidney or liver problems.
It is crucial to take the medication exactly as prescribed and not to miss doses, as this can lead to the development of drug-resistant strains of HIV.
VIROPIL is not a cure for HIV and does not prevent the transmission of the virus. Safe practices, such as using condoms, are still necessary to prevent transmission.
